Geoffrey Perkins: 1953-2008

A giant of British comedy has been tragically taken from us. We pay tribute to the late Geoffrey Perkins

One of the behind-the-scenes giants of British television comedy has been tragically killed in a road accident. Geoffrey Perkins was just 55, when he was hit by a truck in London on Friday. It is believed that he collapsed just prior to the accident, into the path of the vehicle.

It’s fair to say that without Geoffrey Perkins, the British comedy landscape would be a great deal different to how it appears now. He worked on projects such as the radio adaptation of The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, was credited with creating the Mornington Crescent game for I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue (and thus became one of the very few people to fully understand the rules), and become one of the team who brought us the superb Radio Active, and its television spin-off, the sublime KYTV.

Behind the scenes, his credits included Father Ted, Harry Enfield’s Television Programme, The Fast Show, Coupling, The Catherine Tate Show, Spitting Image and Game On, plus many, many more. And both in front of and behind the camera (and microphone), his loss is a significant one.

Here, by way of tribute, is Perkins as Mike Flex in one of my favourite comedy shows of the past few decades, KYTV.

Perkins was someone who really had a huge and beneficial influence on British comedy. For Hitchhikers alone he would be a comedy legend. What a terrible shame.

Couldn't agree more. What a shame to have lost such an influence on many major shows, TV and radio. And Simon's absolutely right about KYTV. They still remain hilarious even today. In fact, I was watching the Martin Chuzzlewit episode just the other day. A very sad loss.
