Doctor Who movie about to be confirmed?

Could David Tennant, Euros Lyn and Russell T Davies be about to take Doctor Who to the big screen?

Published on Jul 6, 2009

Reports circling this morning suggest that the much-mooted Doctor Who movie could be about to be announced at the forthcoming Comic-Con in San Diego. Already we know that the Doctor Who team are sending a panel for the first time, and now the rumour is that it will be used as a platform to announce the first big screen adventure for the Time Lord in many decades. Given that Primeval has already been confirmed for a big screen adventure, there's thinking that it was only a matter of time before Doctor Who would get its chance.

It had been reported already that Russell T Davies had had meetings in America, although whether they were Who-specific or not had not been confirmed. Yet the presence of Davies and David Tennant at the Comic-Con event does indicate some smoke to his particular fire. We already know, as BBC Films had previously confirmed it, that a script for a feature film is in development, and the BBC would presumably be keen for Tennant to take on the big screen adventures, given just how popular a Doctor he's become. He, of course, has all but done filming for his small screen tenure in the role.

BleedingCool is, furthermore, reporting that director Euros Lyn - who has helmed Torchwood: Children Of Earth as well as several Who episodes - has been approached to call the shots on the movie. It suggests that the film could arrive in 2011, and that Russell T Davies would be penning the script.

We'll keep an eye on this story, obviously, and with Comic-Con kicking off on July 23rd, we suspect we haven't got long to wait to find out if it's true or not...

You know what the critically problem with this is ? Cool, it will only work you keep it as British as humanly possible. Remember the 1996 Foxtv pilot episode ? It was hard to fall in love with the Doctor and follow the character when everybody else in show thought he was being weird. That's why I thought that show was shit. Being made out to be British in America made it too weird for most people watching, when most Americans aren't remotely like that and the ones that are, are Candians ! That why asking they're gonna go do a Doctor Who Movie please, please, do it in England, thanks ... :-)

The main problem with this is if Tennent is due to be replaced soon in the TV series then we all know he'll be in no danger as the doctor in the moving. you know he'll make it to the end of the film safely with little to no threat because he would have already become the new doctor in the TV series.

I figure if the film were to be made it would involve the new doctor not tennant. And although I've not seen much of the new boy acting, I really think Tennant would be better. They could, of course, do what they did in the 60s film and just have some random bloke be a doctor of sorts... maybe Nick Frost?

Come on the Dr is never really going to be in that much danger... Its more about making assistants we care about and building a strong enough bond to them that if they are imperiled we will be worried.... Given the patchy record of the specials (well they all have been garbage) I really hope that RTD has the sense to get Billy Piper on board....

@Osiris292, But by that logic, nobody would bother watching Doctor Who simply because there's no peril. The Doctor can't die! Let's face the facts, folks like the stories and humor of a good Doctor Who story. It doesn't matter if the Doctor can die or not. If we were in it to see who dies next week, we would be watching Torchwood more than Doctor Who.

@Cordas NO MORE BILLY PIPER! Christ, I liked her when she was on the show too... but I can only take so much of the "I'm gone forever and can never return. Nope, wait, I'm back again! Whoops, gone again. Hello, I'm back!" crap. It's bad enough The Doctor has been pining away at her for 2 seasons after her initial departure. They need to let Rose rest in peace already. She's getting as monotonous as the Daleks.

the movie could be awesome! I'd like to see a multi doctor story, or perhaps just some throwaway flashbacks to other doctors so they had some screentime! Tell a good story of how the 5th doctor met some villian and then how the 8th took how down once and then the 10th meets him again, theres a lot of room to play with in a movie format.

I can't think of a worse way to introduce Matt Smith than to announce that there's going to be a movie with David Tennant. For that matter, what kind of career move is this for David? He leaves Who to work on other things only to go straight to a Doctor Who movie? I'll believe it when I see the BBC press release. Maybe not even then.

As an American, I can say, please keep it British! I hated the Fox TV Who.

Oh, also, no Daleks. I love the Daleks, but I want some new Nasty for him to fight.

If it goes ahead then I really hope they don't just get a company man like Euros Lyn to do it, or else it'll just end up like a super long and super expensive TV episode. Take JJ Abrams and MI3 as an example. Would be much more interesting to get someone like Garth Jennings who did a pretty good job with HGTTG.

"For that matter, what kind of career move is this for David? He leaves Who to work on other things only to go straight to a Doctor Who movie?" If asked, I think he'd do it though. I think it's too late for fears of being type-cast. (I'm not saying he is, just that if he is, I doubt the film would change that.) If anything landing a franchise character in a big screen role could help his career.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I think that a film, starring Tennant, would be deeply unfair to the incoming Smith. It could well damage both Smith's as well as the actual series' popularity. Remember when, early in his run, a lot of people were complaining that Tennant wasn't as good as Eccleston? It's always difficult for a new actor to be accepted in the role and, had Tennant also had to contend with a 'Who' movie starring Eccleston, then Tennant's popularity might well have flatlined early on. Hell, even Tom Baker, in his first year in the role, got a huge amount of complaints. Why doesn't RTD ever know when to end anything? (Much like how Rose's repeated reappearances kept diminishing her character and story.) Mr. Tennant, it was your choice to leave the role, so please bow out gracefully and don't rush back onto the stage for an encore DURING your replacement's performance
