Doctor Who: BBC confirms John Simm’s return

Simon Brew

The Doctor will face a familiar face at Christmas. But – spoiler warning - there are a few other faces returning in The End Of Time too…

CASTING SPOILERS AHEAD

If, like us, you've been scurrying around the Internet to try and find the best quality version of the trailer to The End Of Time that was shown at the San Diego Comic-Con a few days back, then the news we're about to tell you will hardly come as a surprise. For the BBC has now officially confirmed one of the worst kept secrets about David Tennant's final two special episodes of Doctor Who this Christmas. And that's that John Simm will indeed be returning as The Master.

From the trailer, that's not been officially released in a useable version yet we're afraid, we can see that Simm's hair colour has gone light, and that Tennant's final episodes will also see a collection of faces from the past few years of Who returning. The highlight for us isn't Donna Noble popping back up, but the return of Bernard Cribbins as Wilf.

Also returning for the big send off is the character of Lucy Saxon, played by Alexandra Moen, who was, of course, The Master's wife when he last appeared at the end of season three (although she did shoot him, so there are some loose ends to tie up there). And we're sure we've spotted the Ood in the midst of the trailer, too.

Finally, The End Of Time trailer has been narrated by Mr Timothy Dalton, who will be appearing in the specials as another Time Lord, we understand. James Bond, eh? He gets everywhere.

We can't attach the trailer to this post, but the best version we've found of it thus far is right here.

To be honest, I was hoping there would be a new Master as John Simm is a bit too manic.I think that someone more like the original Master works better as he is more like a good, old fashioned bad guy (tying helpless women to railway tracks etc)but that's just my opinion.

Personally i'm happy with John Simm as the Master, he did a great job in my opinion. Although I reckon he should have replaced David Tennant as the Doctor and not this Matt Smith Kid but hey thats just what i think. Trailer makes it look tre exciting but remember their are 2 other specials planned BEFORE this one!

I like Simm but not his version of the Master. Derek Jacobi was more credible and effective for me. But Simm will have taken his lead from the recharacterisation of the Master in the script. As I recall, RTD went on record at the time saying he only brought the Master back when he'd "got" the character and he saw him as mad. Thus Simm plays him as a bit loopy. It's far more chilling to (under)play an evil character straight rather than OTT, hence why the original Delgado's Master was so memorable. I'm not holding my breath RTD will have learnt any lessons though (or that the end of the season will be other than a bloated massive build up followed by a deus ex machina ending!)

The 3 part episode with the master was my favourite yet and i thought Jon Simm was a incredible master. i've seen i think it's Time and the Rani but it had the master and the rani in it and i thought the master in that was aweful but i also didn't like Colin Baker who was the doctor. I also though Simm would be a great replacement for Tennant but it wouldn't make sense with him already played the master :/

They've had the same actors portray multiple characters in the past (notably Lalla Ward as Romana), so this is not really a bar to JS being a future Doctor.

Simm I thought was a wonderful Master. I agree though, it's all in how it's written, so I look forward to seeing how Moffat writes the charachter. provided of course that RTD lets him survive past the two parter.

I don't know, John Simm was sick thing of awesome as The Master ! My only bitch about him has been that he doesn't have beard ! He's The Master ! The guy gotta have goatee ! All I worried about with this is when we at last get to see David Tennant regenerate into Matt Smith, I so hope there isn't something about dude that makes you automatically dismiss him like we all automatically dismiss Colin Baker as the Doctor. Seriously, I don't want to sit there thinking they should of gone with Paterson Joseph ! He wouldn't be wearing jacket with elbow pads ...

... That and really why do they save the most seriously important episodes to end ? No really, seeing how these specials are being played out and knowing that first episode that Matt Smith is in, is prone to be another Dalek episode, why didn't they then, if they really wanted us to watch it after David Tennant has left, tie these last four shows into Matt Smith first season ?!? That would REALLY make people wanna watch ... ;-)

... The fifth season of Doctor Who staring four episodes of David Tennant and eight of Matt Smith ! Once David Tennant has left, I never gonna watch let alone own another Doctor Who dvd in my life again ! Like hell you are asshole, here's fifth season, take it, take it, TAKE IT !!! Fuck, that's what I want to see from BBC :-)

I also think John Simm woulda made a fantastic Doctor, but he was so deliciously psycho as The Master and I'm thrilled as hell to see he's gonna be back. It was obviously Lucy Saxon who picked up the Mater's ring from the fire after the Doc cremated him, so no surprise she's making a re-appearance. I am so looking forward to this episode. And John Simm as a blonde is juust to die for!
