Doctor Who - Mike "The Streets" Skinner To Star?

Cameron K McEwan

You wouldn't believe the week I've had. I can't talk about it but let's just say I got a part in 'Doctor Who'

The pop star's Twitter account reveals he is to star opposite Matt Smith in the next series of the world's most successful science-fiction show.

Mike Skinner, of the popular beat combo The Streets, has revealed via a social networking site  that he has landed a part in the new series of Doctor Who. A post on Twitter read: "You wouldn't believe the week I've had. I can't talk about it but let's just say I got a part in 'Doctor Who'."

Conspiracists may note that the Tweet has since been withdrawn with the comment: "and just like that. the tweet is deleted." Skinner has 'fronted' The Streets since 2000 scoring a number of hits and awards though the 31 year old has yet to be seen acting.

This would not be the first time The Streets have appeared in the world's longest running science-fiction television show. During 2005's Father's Day, Rose could hear their song "Don't Mug Yourself" on a car radio.

At the moment filming continues on the next series of the show starring Matt Smith and Karen Gillan; the first to be overseen by Steven Moffat.

Oh dear lord NO. I'm twice as glad now that the Lily Allen rumour proved false, as having to sit through both of them on a regular basis would probably put me off Who entirely- though to be fair, his tweet doesn't look like it's specifically a starring role. Maybe he'll only be in one episode - and hopefully get eaten by an alien, never to be seen again :-p

ARGH. Stop hiring 'musicians' to act! Hire actors!! It's what they trained for! It's cheating actors out of their own job. Oh my god I'm about to have a heart attack brought on by sheer nerdrage.

"There is no place for pop stars on Doctor Who!!!" It would be teribly unfair to mention Billie Piper's pop career at this point, because as it turned out, she *could* act. Who would have guessed?! It wasn't her fault some of the material she had to work with was rather dire, and that, for some obscure reason, Russell T Davies wanted Rose Tyler to make more comebacks than Madonna...

Me ? Man I wish they would make more out of music with this show ! Fuck Charles Dickens, Charles Dickens sucks, you want to go back in time go back when Dylan went electric, David Bowie first said goodbye, or final time Beck played on stage ! Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock, Motorhead at Hammersmith, Iron Maiden at Donnington, Led Zeppelin at Knebworth, Oasis at Maine Road, Nirvana at Reading, Cheap Trick at Budokan, Pixies In Chaswick, Prince at O2 or you want to keep it real recent there's things like Arcade Fire, At The Drive In, Duke Spirt Etccc. What's White Stripes, Black Keys, or The Dandy Warhols doing lately ? The Libertines ? Lilly Allen ? Robbie Williams ? Let's get The Beatles going on this show ! Shit those guys have been around insanely long enough to where they're too historically important not too miss ! Man wasn't the song I Am The Walrus, the opening chords inspired by police siren going pass John Lennon house ?!? Yeah cool, that could been the Tardis ! Maybe the whole song isn't just nonsense, it's about the time he spent in space with the Doctor ... :-S

That and I'm totally with LizR on that one though remember the only reason why Russel T Davies hired Billie Piper over Georgia Moffat who were both down as final two candiates for the job as the Doctor's Assistant is because Britney Spears is one person Russel T Davies would turn straight for and Billy Piper was the closest he was gonna get to getting her on the show ! He still made the right decision in casting her but still, shit dude, that is random call ;-)

Across The Universe ! That wasn't two random chicks, John Lennon and Paul Mc Cartney pulled off the street to sing back up on that song, yeah but no, that was the Doctor and his assistant and yes, I'm gonna stop now :-)

The doctor is a chick Discrespective? nice visual though , and I love that Beatles number. Mike Skinner ??? arghh with his 'Elizabeth Duuuuke' charm, would just sound like a male Billie, cept thankfully without the Banana Split style grin. Could be interesting, but am sensing an off button moment.

God, they are turning all of my favorite shows into crap. Isn't it bad enough we are having some young kid that looks like a junkie play Doctor Who? Now we have to deal with the show being overtaken musicians?
